Your website is about to become an API. What WebMCP means for AEO
On August 8, Reddit effectively vanished from ChatGPT. Not because OpenAI announced anything. Not because a deal expired. A quiet change in how ChatGPT searches the web dropped Reddit citations by 86% in four days, and the data from PromptWatch tells a story bigger than one platform losing visibility. It is about what happens to everyone who builds on borrowed distribution.

What the data shows
PromptWatch tracks citation share across AI search engines by monitoring which domains appear in generated responses. Their citation tracking data tells the story in two numbers. From July 18 to August 7, Reddit averaged 3.83% of all ChatGPT Search citations. By August 14 to 17, that number was 0.52%. As Forbes reported, Reddit went from being one of the most-cited domains in ChatGPT to nearly invisible.
The collapse was specific to ChatGPT. PromptWatch's comparison showed Google AI Overviews declining only from about 2.37% to 2.10%, an 11.3% relative drop, and Google AI Mode going from 2.22% to 1.54%, a 30.5% relative decline. No cliff. No single-day event. The Reddit drop in ChatGPT was something different.
What changed under the hood
On August 8, ChatGPT's use of the site: search operator jumped from about 0.37% of its fan-out queries to 16.8%, a 46-fold increase in a single day. At the same time, the average number of searches ChatGPT runs per response nearly doubled, from 1.08 to 1.83.
What that means in practice: instead of running one broad web search and letting Reddit threads surface alongside everything else, ChatGPT started running targeted searches against specific domains. Official documentation, product sites, publisher articles. The kind of sources you go to when you already know where the answer lives, not the kind you find by browsing a forum.
Search Engine Journal cautioned that PromptWatch's data shows when the shift happened, not definitively why. The platform acknowledged it cannot rule out data collection issues. But the 46x spike in site-scoped queries is a structural change in how ChatGPT retrieves, not a measurement artifact.
This happened before
September 2025: Reddit's ChatGPT citation share dropped from roughly 7% to 1%, a comparable collapse. Profound's analysis of over 4 billion AI citations found Reddit rebounded to about 3% afterward, consistent with spring 2026 levels. Reddit held its number two position behind Wikipedia throughout that volatility.
The 2025 decline was traced to a change in how data could be collected rather than a shift in what ChatGPT valued. That distinction matters. If this is a technical adjustment rather than a deliberate downranking, a recovery is plausible. But as the analysis noted, "a rebound this time is not guaranteed." People who tore up their strategy in September 2025 spent months rebuilding toward the position they already had.

Reddit is pulling in two directions
While Reddit is losing visibility in ChatGPT, it is doing two other things that matter for the AEO picture.
It is reconsidering its AI data deals. Reddit shares fell roughly 6% in premarket on July 22 after the Wall Street Journal reported renewal talks for its $60 million-a-year Google AI data-licensing deal have hit turbulence. Reddit executives are weighing whether to restrict Google's access altogether, questioning whether the deal still serves the company when Google's AI answers cut into traffic to Reddit itself.
It is becoming an AI content platform itself. Reddit is now testing features that convert text posts and comments into AI-narrated videos and podcasts. CEO Steve Huffman told investors that people were already converting Reddit content into podcasts and videos on other platforms, and Reddit wants to own that conversion internally. The feature labels its output "Real conversation voiced by AI" and lets users toggle between the text view and a video version of the same thread.
Reddit is simultaneously the biggest third-party source that AI engines cite, a company questioning whether those AI engines deserve its data, and a platform building its own AI layer to keep users from needing the engines at all. All three forces pull in different directions.
What this means for AEO
As one AEO consultant framed it: a strategy concentrated on any single third-party source creates a single point of failure. Reddit was historically one of the most-cited domains across AI engines. Its citation share went from table-stakes to near-zero on one platform overnight, with no announcement, no changelog, and no way for affected publishers to prepare.
The structural lesson is about diversification, not about Reddit specifically. Any domain that depends on one AI engine for citation traffic is exposed to the same risk: an algorithmic change that shifts retrieval behavior with no notice and no transparency. The PromptWatch data shows this can happen to the second most-cited domain on the web. It can happen to anyone.
What to do this week
Run one query you care about in ChatGPT Search and check whether Reddit still appears in the citations. Then run the same query in Perplexity and Google AI Mode. If the answers cite your competitors' Reddit threads in one engine but not another, that is your AEO gap laid bare in real time. The fix is not to chase Reddit harder. It is to make your own pages the answer the engine reaches for, wherever the retrieval starts.
